BIOGRAPHY

​

Valentina Catto is an Italian illustrator and visual artist based in Turin, known for her atmospheric, narrative-driven work. She studied Art at the Università degli Studi di Torino and graduated with a degree in Film Studies. She later lived in New York and London, where she worked on theatre posters, stop-motion animation and concept art.

In 2017 she returned to Turin and began working as a freelance illustrator. Her clients and collaborations include The Folio Society, for which she illustrated Anne Brontë’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall in 2020, Rizzoli and Lattes Editori, for whom she has created illustrations for children's fiction and educational publications. She has also designed the posters for the last three editions of the Global Film Festival, held at Cinema Massimo in Turin.

Her work, inspired by dark fairy tales, poetry, fashion and cinema, combines digital collage and digital painting to create richly textured, evocative imagery. Her work has been shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards, the AOI Poster Prize for Illustration and the FIDA Awards and her work Lilith was selected for the Autori di Immagini annual, presented at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

Her recent practice has expanded into two ongoing personal projects exploring queer intimacy and relationships through different visual languages. Hiraeth explores queer male intimacy, desire and vulnerability, while A SIDE is a slow-burn illustrated MM romance centred on loneliness, healing, tenderness and the small gestures through which intimacy grows.
